Jonathan Jones

Jonathan Jones AM is a long term resident of Caloundra (since 1998). He has developed a noteworthy style in both oil, watercolour and fine felt pen drawing. He was taught initially by his first Commanding Officer, Captain Dacre H.D. Smythe, RAN at the Royal Australian Naval College. Jonathan went on from there (way back in 1966) to develop his appreciation for and skills development in Art during a Naval career that spanned 38 years. He is twice a Finalist in the Local Artist Local Content Acquisitive Competition (a Regional Gallery Caloundra Competition), is President of the Caloundra Arts Centre Association and was president of Friends of the Gallery Caloundra for two years concurrently. He is an appointed Manager /Curator of the Beausang Room Gallery and the Sethna Pumicestone Gallery at the Events Centre Sunshine Coast, Caloundra — he has been in that role for almost 6 years now.

Jonathan has emerged as a devoted artist with a flair for conventional realism and creative, restrained impressionism both of which genres are at the core of his arts practise. Watercolour and oil are predominant in his choice of medium, and a dabble in acrylics is also now ongoing fascination for Oriental Art and its classic elegance and captivating expressions has also been an emerging influence on many of recent works. He is a Member of The Order of Australia.( 1987).

For our 2024 exhibition, Jonathan contributed the mixed media work REFLECTION: THE ARABIAN HORSE as well as the fine felt pen drawing Ahnshahn Ahmahni.
